Exercises: Reading plot for its genre

  1. Does the plot of the narrative you are studying conform to any of the basic types with which you are familiar (the detective story, the western, science fiction, fantasy, romantic comedy, the adventure story, and so on)? Alternatively, does it contain any individual passages that conform to any of those types?
  2. To what extent, and in which respects, does the narrative you are studying stick closely to the standard plot elements of that genre and to what extent, and in which respects, does it diverge from them?
  3. All in all, how does the narrativeĀ use the expectations generated in you as a reader by its apparent adherence to a particular plot type to engage your interest and affect your emotions as you read or watch that narrative?
